  • The Ribbon The ribbon is part of the Microsoft Office Fluent user interface and is firstly introduced in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007. In Outlook 2010, the ribbon has replaced the previous menus in the main Outlook window. In addition, the ribbon can be customized to include custom tabs that one can personalize to better match their work style.
  • Backstage When one selects the File menu in Outlook 2010, they will be transported to Backstage view, which hides their active Inbox or Calendar in favor of a full screen set of account controls. This is standard procedure for all Office 2010 apps.
  • Quick Steps The new Outlook ribbon is validated by the introduction of Quick Steps, which are a mixture of custom ribbon buttons, Outlook rules and macros rolled into one. Quick Steps allows one to apply multiple actions to a message or appointment by simply clicking a button in the Quick Steps menu. If mail is organized into folders, Quick Steps are a real timesaver; items can be marked as read and shifted into specified subfolders with a single click. The ability to create custom Quick Steps opens up a world of efficient possibilities for email enthusiasts.
  • Conversation View Outlook 2010 automatically groups related email replies into conversations, similarly to Gmail. Conversations are outlined in the inbox by a grey arrow/chevron box. Above, one can see a collapsed conversation on the left and an expanded conversation, exposing the related reply messages, on the right. Conversation view saves a great deal of inbox screen space and keeps email intuitively organized. Moreover, Outlook 2010 offers an Ignore Conversation option. By selecting Ignore Conversation, all subsequent responses to the email string remain hidden within the conversation view and don’t generate new mail notifications from Outlook.
  • Social Connector The Outlook Social Connector imports social networking information into Outlook 2010, providing a centralized setting to view status messages generated both in and out of Outlook. Microsoft released a Software Development Kit for the Social Connector, which means a Connector can be written to send status data to Outlook 2010.

The Social Connector is an import tool, meaning that status messages cannot be updated from within Outlook 2010, only read through a view named “the People Pane.” Versions of the Social Connector have been ported back to Outlook 2003 and 2007, but it was designed especially for Outlook 2010 and to connect to SharePoint 2010. An upgrade to Outlook 2010 has to be made if one wants to maintain Outlook as the backbone of their social data consumption.
