Microsoft has always been one of the foundations on which our modern digital revolution took place. The company started by Bill Gates single-handedly made computers a household machine (a machine, which was once claimed to have a customer base no larger than a dozen). With its operating systems that enabled a common man to connect with a machine with ease, the company has given us some revolutionizing gifts and keeps ensuring what you pay for is exactly what you need.

But that does not mean Microsoft never faltered. With its infamous Windows Vista, the reputation of Microsoft took a serious blow. So when Microsoft Windows Server 2008 arrived, which was the Vista-counterpart for the server line, eyebrows were raised. But Server 2008 shut all mouths in a spectacular manner. Windows Server 2008 was launched at a time when people were getting frustrated with the Server 2003 and looking elsewhere for better options. But with this one release, Microsoft entered the game again with a bang. So let’s take a look at the features that made it such a huge success on the selling aspect.

Get To Know the features

  • Server core Windows had always banked its popularity on being user-friendly, with its simple applications and even simpler interface. But this also left it vulnerable to attacks, and slow. This is resolved in Server 2008 with Server Core. It is a variation of the standard installation, which discards the Windows Explorer shell, .NET Framework, Internet Explorer and any other feature that was not the part of the core server. All the interaction is done via command line, which makes it scaled back and secured from major attacks.
  • Windows System Resource Manager One of the biggest issues with Windows Server 2003 was its huge resource footprint. This is tackled in the new version with the WSRM. The WSRM is an integrated application that allows you to control the time and amount of resource allocation. There is a certain criteria that could restrict the amount of resource allocation on certain processes. Furthermore, similar to the modular approach of Apache, it divides some applications into smaller components, giving you more power to select and reject certain modules.
  • Active Directory Active Directory has always been a part of Windows Server operating systems, but it has undergone impressive changes. While earlier it was concerned only with centralized domain management, in Windows Server 2008 it was re-introduced as Active Directory Domain Services and packed a lot of sub-services. These include federation services, lightweight directory services, certificate services and directory rights management services, among others. In short, ADDS now serves as a umbrella for a wide range of directory-related services, making things easier for you.
  • Security Security has always been a concern with Windows (at least, that's what Linux and Mac users will have you believe). But with Windows Server 2008 comes many interesting steps to make it more secure. Like we mentioned, the reduction of installations and lack of GUI roots out many of the surface vulnerabilities. Furthermore, Server 2008 uses BitLocker, a powerful disk encryption feature to protect the data. As we saw in Vista, the AES encryption-based BitLocker is a formidable encryption technique. In addition to it, another security feature of Vista is used: the Address Space Load Randomization (ASLR). ASLR makes the system immune to buffer overflow attacks by changing the location of essential system services on each reboot.
  • Server Manager Continuing the server features of Server 2003, the Windows Server 2008 makes it better by giving you better control. It is a role-based tool, which means you don’t have to install the full package for running specific services. This greatly increases the efficiency, which when combined with the lack of GUI, makes it one of the faster servers in the market.
  • Hyper-V Virtualization One of the biggest features of Server 2008, this comes at a time when the world was fast realizing the potential of virtualization. The hypervisor-based virtualization software allows you to virtually install the server on top of the kernel layer of any OS. This feature is largely native to the x86-64 editions, although you can run the MMC snap-in to install Hyper-V upon IA-32.
  • Windows PowerShell For the lovers of Linux, Windows have always seemed to be like that immature kid who doesn't know what to do with life (because we all love stereotypes). But the Server 2008 comes with Windows PowerShell, which allows you to use command lines for execution. Apart from the fact that it speeds up the performance considerably, it will also make Windows Server a more popular choice among Unix/Linux users.

Why you should buy it

  • Microsoft tried to give you the best of all worlds in a single package. It picks up the best features that were available in third-party applications (like Apache's modular approach and VMWare's virtualization) and bundles them into its Server.
  • Windows Server 2008 is one of the first servers to harness the potential of virtualization. Saving you the trouble to have dedicated machines, you can instead install the Server instance virtually on top of any OS. As an icing on the cake, the virtualization feature comes free with the Server 2008 edition.
  • Windows Server 2008 is a much faster option compared to most contemporary servers. With a low resource footprint and modular approach that makes installing whole bundles unnecessary, along with greater control of resource allocation, Server 2008 gives you great efficiency without trading off functionality.
  • The core Operating System has been upgraded to an extent that it hardly resembles its infamous counterpart, Vista. It includes hot-patching, which means you don’t have to reboot the server for installing non-kernel patches. Also, it supports dynamic hardware partitioning.
